Regarding wood selection, there are many considerations that effect whether a finished product will
be suitable for its application. Each specie has its’ own beauty and variety that requires a
sorting and selection process to create an attractive door. The choice of grades we offer brings
out the best of each wood while minimizing waste of this important resource. If you would like a
closer look at a specific grade of a specific specie, we suggest that you order a sample door or
visit our website before placing an order.
RUSTIC GRADE
A unique specie offering an unpolished appearance.
Rustic Red Oak, Cherry, Maple and Pine will allow unfilled pitted knots, split and cracked wood.
All natural colors and character of the wood is allowed on the face and back. Pitch, mineral,
sapwood
heartwood and knots are common.

KNOTTY GRADE

Knotty grade will have sound and solid knots. All knots on the face will be flush.
PAINT GRADE
Paint Grade is recommended for opaque finishes only.
Paint Grade will use the sapwood and/or heartwood of the tight grain wood species Birch, Soft
Maple and Hard Maple, mill option. Any color variation and character markings such as mineral or
stain are allowed if the surface remains smooth for painting.

Paint Grade Maple will be limited to the sapwood and/or heartwood of Soft Maple or Hard Maple. Any
color variation and character markings such as mineral or stain are allowed if the surface
remains smooth for painting.

PLYWOOD GRADE
Veneer
The core material for both ¼” and ½” thick plywood is medium density fiberboard, MDF. The veneer
faces are "A" grade, plain sliced and book matched with a matching species back. The same grade
plywood is used for both CUSTOM GRADE and SELECT GRADE plywood insert doors, DPP (Door Plywood
Panel) and DMDF (Door MDF)

The color of the plywood used in doors will not always match the color of the solid wood frames.
Although we strive to minimize this difference, the variation is considered acceptable.
While all plywood conforms to the formaldehyde emission standard, ASTM E 1333-90, it cannot be
considered formaldehyde free.

Medex
High density water resistant MDF with no plywood veneer, used for paint grade. Check with your
finish supplier for proper application materials and any necessary special material preparation.

SELECT GRADE
Recommend for clear and light finishes.

Select Grade Ash, Hard Maple and White Birch will allow only the sapwood of these species on the
faces of panels, frames, plywood and solid inserts. Although it is the nature of fine hardwoods
that some color variation will always be present, the pieces that are chosen for the panels and
frames for this grade will be selected and matched for maximum color uniformity. Character markings
such as pin knots and mineral will be fewer and less pronounced than the Custom Grade. Only very
slight occurrences of the heartwood in the machined areas are acceptable.

Select Grade Cherry, Red Birch, Walnut, Red Oak and White Oak will allow only the heartwood of
these species on the faces of panels, frames, plywood and solid inserts. Although it is the nature
of fine hardwoods that some color variation will always be present, the pieces that are chosen for
the panels and frames for this grade will be selected and matched for maximum color uniformity.
Character markings such as gum pockets, pin knots and mineral will be fewer and less pronounced
than the Custom Grade. Only very slight occurrences of the sapwood in the machined areas are
acceptable. Cherry with clear and light finishes will darken with age.

Clear White Pine and Mahogany both display even grain patterns and texture. Even though there is no
clear distinction between heartwood and sapwood with these species, there will be some color
variation with the yellows, tans and whites of the Pine and the browns and red brown of Mahogany.
Very occasionally these woods will show sap streaks and color streaks.
